Suspension

Shocks, struts, bushes and ball joints. Worn suspension lengthens your braking distance long before it starts making noise.

Suspension rarely fails all at once. A shock absorber loses its damping gradually over tens of thousands of kilometres, and because the change is slow, most drivers adapt to it without noticing. The car still drives. It just stops settling after a bump, takes longer to stop, and starts chewing the edges off a set of tyres that should have lasted another year.

The old test of bouncing the corner by hand and counting the rebounds will catch a shock that has completely given up. It will not catch one that is at sixty percent, which is where most of the safety cost sits. We inspect on the lift with the weight off the wheels, check each unit for fluid weeping past the seal, and put a bar on the wheel to feel for play in the ball joints and bushes before anything gets condemned.

Bushes are the quiet ones. A perished control arm bush lets the wheel move a few millimetres out of position under load, which shows up as vague steering and uneven tyre wear rather than as a noise. Ball joints announce themselves more clearly, usually as a knock over rough road or a creak at low speed on full lock. Both are wear items and both are worth catching before they take a tyre with them.

Shocks are replaced in pairs across an axle, never one side alone. Fitting a new unit opposite a tired one leaves the car braking unevenly, which is worse than two matched units that are both slightly worn. If only one has failed we will say so and still recommend the pair, with the reason.

What affects the price. The biggest factor is whether your car takes a bare shock absorber or a complete strut assembly with the spring and top mount included. Age is the second. Bolts that have spent ten years under a South African car take heat and time to release, and occasionally they shear and need drilling out. We flag that risk when we quote rather than after.

Alignment is part of the job, not an upsell. Anything that changes suspension geometry has to be measured and set afterwards, otherwise the new parts wear a fresh set of tyres just as fast as the old ones did.

Common questions

Do I really need an alignment after suspension work?

Yes. Replacing struts, control arms or ball joints changes camber and toe. Driving away without setting them back to specification will wear the tyres unevenly within a few thousand kilometres.

Can I replace just one shock?

Physically yes, but we do not recommend it. Uneven damping across an axle unbalances the car under braking. Shocks go in pairs.
